THE CAMPBELL APARTMENT

About

Picture
"Sundogs" from The Campbell Apartment, is a natural successor to their '08 debut, "Insomniacs Almanac" (Blacktop Records), recorded in Brooklyn and produced by Ian Love from the band Rival Schools.

When singer/songwriter/front man Ari Vais (Humbert) relocated to San Francisco from Brooklyn after a year of touring Ontario and the Northeast, he recruited guitarist Jody Porter (Fountains Of Wayne) to produce the next TCA record "In" (Lightrail Records). Porter also played guitars and some bass and drums on the album.

If "Insomniacs Almanac" was a new romantic classic, evoking the Smiths and Elvis Costello, the hard hitting "In" pushed the envelope with more swagger, bravado, noise and darkness. Where the first record painted scenes of hope amid heartbreak, "In' spat both bitterness and resignation, like on the very 'final' sounding "There Goes The Sun".  The Campbell Apartment, staffed by Scotsmen living in London (Chrissy McDougall and Gary "Rab" Flemming , as well as Jody Porter rounding out the lineup between Fountains of Wayne tours), toured England in the fall of 2011, to great acclaim (particularly in London where Vais has previously resided).

Three years later, happily married and (at the time) sober, Vais returned to the studio with George S. Rosenthal at the helm, cutting a batch of six new songs with Scott Johnson on bass and Steve Mathews on drums. "Sundogs" has a fresh feel, neither hopeful at finding meaning nor defeated, with the songs shifting emotional priorities to independence ("I'm Free"), the inevitability and necessity of change ("Something In The Way", "Seaside Heights, New Jersey"), and finally finding true love (the epic "Love of My Life").

The album has been charting on college radio in the USA and Canada, and has received a premiere from MAGNET MAGAZINE. Vais is currently working on the follow up full length that the lush, open, whimsical and free "Sundogs" hints at.  While the first two albums are available on CD from Rub Wrongways Records, "Sundogs' is available digitally as well as via limited edition (400 of them, signed) translucent Gold 12" vinyl. It closes with a klezmer-esque, Tom Waits evoking dirge "What Do You Think Of That", a song both funny and dark that points to exciting new sonic directions for The Campbell Apartment.
